The roots of Merit lay in the friendship forged by four college friends who crossed paths at Syracuse University. The group was formed in 2002 after Wil Mecum and Jeff Nelson left a college band and started work with a local singer songwriter in Brenna Merritt. Hal Appleby's rock vision was the final piece of Merit.
After finishing collegiate work at SU, Merit continues to call Syracuse, New York home. Their continuous practicing schedule and committed touring of local music venues has helped them hone their powerful live act, propelling them to open for several national acts including Thousand Foot Krutch, Liz Phair, Stage, Bif Naked, The Reputation, and Freya. Their first demo, recorded in May 2003 found it's way to a Syracuse rock station, where it not only received airplay, but also commanded them an hour-long interview and acoustic performance.
Members of the Syracuse music community started to take notice of the strength of Merit. The local radio support garnered the attention of Aux Records, a newly formed indie label in Central New York. With the help of Aux Records, Merit recorded its first full-length album, When We Fight, released in April 2004.
Since the album release Merit has made several more in studio radio appearances and has received support from stations ranging from Rochester to Albany, NY with Man on a String breaking into the top ten most played songs on K-Rock in Syracuse. The band was also honored as the recipient of the Brian Bourke Award for Best New Artist at the 2004 Syracuse Area Music Awards. After a series of Northeast dates this fall, the band will soon begin touring the country in hopes of showing everyone the honor of Merit.
